At Whizz People, we believe in using our skills to give back, especially when it comes to supporting local communities and places of worship that bring people together. Every so often, we take on a project purely because it matters, not because it pays the bills. This was one of those projects.
Recently, we had the honour of designing and developing a brand-new website for Thamesmead Islamic Centre CIC, completely pro bono. This was more than just a web project. It was an act of community support, and a way for us to contribute to a space that serves hundreds of local families in South East London.
Why we took it on
The centre's committee run prayer services, community events and outreach for a fast-growing local population, mostly on volunteer time and community donations. Their old web presence didn't reflect the work they were doing or make it easy for new families to find prayer times, events or contact details. That's a small thing to fix for us, and a big thing for a community organisation trying to reach the people it serves.
We treated the build the same way we'd treat any paying client's site: proper structure, clear navigation, mobile-friendly pages, and content organised around what visitors actually need, not what looks good in a screenshot. No shortcuts because there was no invoice attached.

What the committee said
We're proud that the final result deeply moved the mosque committee. In a heartfelt note to the Whizz People team, the management team wrote:
We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to you and your team for the outstanding work you have done in creating our website. It looks absolutely amazing, and we are truly impressed by the dedication, professionalism, and creativity that you brought to this project.
They went on to acknowledge the time and resources invested:
Your support and care have been beyond generous, and we genuinely feel that you have looked after us with the utmost sincerity.
We are incredibly grateful for this warm message. It's a reminder that real impact comes not just from what we build, but from how we support the people and values that matter most.
Why this matters to us
Creating the website for Thamesmead Islamic Centre wasn't about recognition, it was about responsibility. We see our pro bono work as part of our wider duty to contribute positively to society, and we're proud to stand alongside local initiatives that serve both faith and community.
To the entire team at Thamesmead Islamic Centre: thank you for allowing us to be part of something meaningful. May the site continue to support your outreach, bring people together, and serve your growing community.
We take on a small number of pro bono builds each year for community organisations, places of worship and local charities. If that's you, get in touch and tell us about your project.
